Autotote

Autotote Systems, Inc. (now known as Scientific Games Racing) is a multi-national ISV dedicated to serving the racing industry and lottery organizations on multiple continents. Autotote’s customers were limited to "same-day" hardcopy wager reports. They required a system to perform historical data analysis to improve resource planning and operating costs. In addition, the explosion of simulcast racing resulted in the need to improve performance and increase capacity on their existing platform.

Omicron developed a Product Vision strategy that blended market needs analysis with Autotote’s current strengths and opportunities. The resulting plan outlined the direction and technology timeline for their next-generation product. Omicron wrote a custom listener to intercept approximately 1,000,000 daily transactions to meet the demands of Autotote’s customers. Omicron used standard data warehousing and OLAP principles based on a Microsoft centric architecture, with SQL Server at its core. By using OLAP principles, the "real-time" data schemas enabled customizable and user initiated reports, via a browser, without impacting the performance of their core "Tote" product.

To address Autotote’s back-end performance needs, Omicron determined the best approach was to port their existing VAX platform running under a VMS Operating System to an Alpha 64-bit RISC architecture. This software is now the backbone of Autotote’s operations worldwide. These products have helped Autotote maintain their dominant market share by providing their customers with the most up-to-date software tools available, while at the same time reducing operating costs at each racing venue.
